After months of speculation, the DEA announced today that there would be little change for cannabis in the eyes of the federal government. Cannabis will remain a Schedule I Controlled Substance, which declares that is has "no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.”
The DEA continues to ignore the 25 states who have passed some form of medical marijuana and the countless stories of patients nationwide who use cannabis as medicine and depend on it for their survival and quality of life.
It has also been reported by USA Today, that changes are coming to allow more universities to study cannabis.
“The announcement to be published Friday in the Federal Register relaxes the rules for marijuana research to make it easier for institutions to grow marijuana for scientific study. The DEA currently authorizes just one grow facility in Mississippi.”
With opioid addiction killing Americans at a higher rate than guns and alcohol, this is a time when the world truly needs the ‘pharmaceutical exit’ drug that is cannabis. The obtuse, capital-greased wheels of the political system, NIDA, and the perpetuation of prohibition have hindered the forward progression of cannabis as medicine for decades now.
With legalization on the ballot this November in nine states, including California, the end of prohibition is inevitable. We are still forced to ask the question; how long will we continue to suffer?
